From Idea To Delivery

Our custom license plate art design process, from idea to delivery

Every custom piece we build starts as a conversation and ends as a hand-assembled metal artwork hanging on your wall. Here is exactly how a Packwood Plates commission moves from your first message to a finished license plate art piece, shipped from our Tennessee workshop, so you know what to expect at each step.

Proof Before Build

The five stages of a Packwood Plates commission

  • Consultation: you tell us the theme, names, states, teams, or dates that matter and we talk through size and budget.
  • Digital mockup: within two business days you receive a proof showing layout, plate choices, and finished dimensions.
  • Plate sourcing: we hunt down authentic vintage tags or match crisp replicas to fit your color and era.
  • Hand assembly: plates are cut, cleaned, mounted, and sealed by hand on a sturdy backing built to hang.
  • Quality check and crating: every edge and fastener is inspected before the piece is wrapped for transit.
  • Shipping and tracking: your finished art leaves Tennessee with a tracking number and protective packaging.

Why our process protects your idea

Nothing is built on a guess

Because we lock in a mockup before any metal is cut, you never gamble on how the finished piece will look. Spacing, plate era, and color balance are all settled on paper first, so the artwork that ships matches what you approved.

Real plates, real meaning

Whether we source a tag from the year you were born or build around a family plate you mail in, the materials carry actual history. That sourcing step is where a custom commission stops being decor and starts being a keepsake.

Handcrafted, not stamped out

Each piece is assembled one at a time in our Tennessee workshop, so the cuts, layout, and finish are tailored to your specific design instead of run through a machine. That is why two custom orders never look identical.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a custom license plate art order take from start to finish?

Most custom pieces ship within two to three weeks of approving your mockup. Consultation and the first proof usually happen within two business days, then plate sourcing and hand assembly take the bulk of the timeline. Rush requests for birthdays or holidays can often be accommodated if you reach out early.

Do I get to approve a design before you build my plate art?

Yes. Before any cutting or assembly begins we send a digital mockup showing layout, plate selection, color balance, and dimensions. You can request changes to spacing, lettering, or plate choices, and nothing moves to the workshop until you sign off on the proof.

Can I supply my own license plates for a custom piece?

Absolutely. Many customers send us a meaningful family plate, an old state tag, or a vehicle plate to feature as the centerpiece. We clean, prep, and integrate it into the design, and if a plate is too damaged to use we will suggest a matching replica so the look stays consistent.
