License Plate Art Care Guide: Keep Your Piece Looking Perfect for Decades
Steel license plate art is low maintenance — but a few simple habits will keep it looking sharp for decades. Here's exactly what to do (and what to avoid).

Here's the good news: license plate art made from real steel and aluminum is extraordinarily low maintenance compared to canvas, wood, or fabric art. It doesn't fade, warp, or absorb moisture. With a few simple habits, a well-made piece will look as good in 20 years as it does when it arrives at your door.
Routine Cleaning
Dust your piece monthly using a soft microfiber cloth. This prevents buildup in the embossed lettering and around the cut edges. For pieces in high-traffic areas (near a grill, in a garage, above a bar), wipe down more frequently.
- ✓Use a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth
- ✓Wipe with the grain of the metal, not against it
- ✓For stubborn spots, use a small amount of mild soap on a damp cloth, then wipe dry immediately
- ✓Do not use abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or anything with bleach
Pro tip: Avoid leaving moisture on the surface. Steel can rust if water sits on it for extended periods — but a quick wipe-down and dry is all you need.
Indoor vs Outdoor Display
Packwood Plates pieces are designed for indoor display. Covered outdoor spaces (a covered porch, a garage with a roof) are generally fine with occasional maintenance. Fully exposed outdoor environments — direct rain, sprinkler contact, extreme humidity — will shorten the life of any steel art. If you want outdoor display, mention it when ordering so we can apply an appropriate protective finish.
Humidity and Climate
Indoor climate control is your best friend. Standard home humidity (30–50% RH) is ideal for steel art. Basements and garages can get humid in summer — if your space runs above 60% humidity regularly, consider a small dehumidifier. The real enemy isn't humidity alone but condensation — moisture forming on a cold metal surface and sitting there.
Protecting the Finish
Our pieces come with a protective clear coat that seals the metal and existing plate patina. You do not need to apply any additional coatings or wax. The existing finish is durable under normal display conditions. If you notice any scratches on the clear coat from rough handling, a light application of clear metal sealant (available at any hardware store) can refresh the protection.
Moving Your Piece
License plate art ships in custom protective packaging — if you're moving or need to transport your piece, use the original box if you still have it. If not, wrap the piece in moving blankets or bubble wrap, then pad inside a rigid cardboard box. The edges of cut metal can catch on materials, so make sure there's padding on all sides.
Pro tip: Taking a piece off the wall? Have someone help. The keyhole hangers mean the piece needs to be lifted up and away from the screws — harder to do solo with a heavy piece.
If Your Piece Arrives Damaged
Damage during shipping is rare given our custom packaging, but it happens. If your piece arrives with any damage, contact us within 48 hours with photos of the damage and the packaging. We stand behind our work: we'll repair or replace the piece at no cost to you. This policy covers shipping damage, not normal wear after display.
